About the project

A public research space for
shared musical histories.

Digital Genealogy of Folk Melodies brings digital humanities, cultural history, and accessible web design into one evolving platform.

01 / Mission

To make musical circulation visible without flattening its complexity.

The project studies how melodies move across language, community, geography, and media. Its public website turns research records into stories, maps, timelines, and transparent evidence trails.

The initial focus lies in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Balkans, Anatolia, West Asia, North Africa, and connected diasporas.

Research

Relational, not national

The unit of analysis is the connection between versions—not an isolated national song catalogue.

Design

Story before database

Visitors first encounter an intelligible story, with structured metadata available beneath it.

Infrastructure

Built to grow

The static prototype can evolve into a multilingual, database-backed, participatory archive.

02 / Researcher

Dr. Fırat Erdoğmuş

Cultural researcher · digital humanities practitioner · software developer

Fırat Erdoğmuş works across media, cultural history, digital research infrastructure, and web development. The project brings together his experience in academic research, public knowledge platforms, mapping, archives, and software.

This website is conceived as both a scholarly project and an open, collaborative public resource.
